Today I will toast the magnificent beast
\nWho has given herself to provide us this feast.
\nI honor the life and the days she did live
\nAnd I laud her with joy for the gift she did give.<\/p>\n
The hues of her plumage in trees of the fall
\nForetold her great beauty, our fine Butterball.
\nMidst cranberries now she has taken her place
\nWith potatoes and stuffing on oak and on lace,
\nThis creature of grace, illusive and free,
\nWho has dipped once her head for you and for me.<\/p>\n
I thank you, sweet hen of the wood and the glade.
\nIt\u2019s your presence here has my great pleasure made.
\nI will not waste of your sacrifice
\nThough some of you soon may be resting on ice.
\nI\u2019ll gratefully savor each succulent bite,
\nConsuming each bit of your dark and your white.
\nI\u2019ll pull at your wishbone as tradition demands
\nAnd lick your sweet taste from my fingers and hands.
\nI\u2019ll wallow in excess, if just for today
\nBecause of the kindnesses you\u2019ve passed our way.
\nTomorrow I may have a sandwich, or two,
\nAnd you know that I\u2019ll still be thinking of you.<\/p>\n
Oh many and more are the joys that you bring
\nThink nothing of being the bird that can\u2019t sing.
\nI honor you now for who you have been
\nAnd what you are now, my sweet forest hen.
\nNow raise up your glasses to her one and all
\nAnd cheer the fowl fortune that\u2019s entered our hall.<\/p>\n
Fly on in your freedom, fine beasts of the field,
\nAnd live as you will \u2018til you\u2019re plucked and you\u2019re peeled.
\nI\u2019ll grant that your grace and you beauty are great,
\nBut I\u2019ll love you much more when you\u2019re gracing my plate.<\/p>\n
So raise up your glasses and raise up your fork
\nFor it\u2019s up with the bird and away with the pork.
\nEnjoy who you are, what you do, while you\u2019re living
